The world wide web is a world wide world with lots of surprises that can cause you nostalgia, joy, sadness, shock, disgust, hatred towards the human race, etc. But the web has 2 categories from its history and we are going to talk about them. Heads-up: You don't classify a website's web place by its design, but rather its content. Some anvilheaded individuals think like this.
This is the classic web terminally online teenagers are usually drooling & craving for it like one of the malnourished kids inside my basement. Going to the point: this web was a totally different world where people would post their personal pages about themselves, opinions, hobbies, videogames, selling stuff, offering services, etc. If you made a website on the internet back in this era (around 1991-2004-ish), you already were the coolest kid in your class. Nowadays, that still happens but people rather care about your private part's size. What people usually did in these times was often type a random webiste URL and get anything, these websites were usually static but lifeful & coded like I am doing now in Neocities, but usually with other services, bought domains or mostly Geocities. Other sites were usually companies like Microslop, AOL or your favorite videogame company at that time announcing new software which you should buy at your own local shop, and let's not forget search engines or web portals like Yahoo! or Google which provided useful information for the user, this was special and needed in this period. Everyone who used the internet was considered blessed at this time. This site is an example of Web 1.0.
Internet was starting to need way more communication in this era, people were being able to afford more hardware, software and devices. Some groups of nerdish people were also being getting interested in coding, connecting and adding funky features (using APIs) inside their websites or others websites, like posting your garbage - wait - you mean: this is the concept of social media, and where it starts. Web 2.0 emphasized user-generated content like the definition states, this means you could post a video on this new platform YouTube, or shock someone with a grotesque image, and tag people and share your crap... it was magic. And you didn't need your own website! that's useless, Geocities got devastated by Yahoo! in 2009 you old bore! All you have to do is register and brag about it seconds later to stay up to date with everybody you know. But these were only the early days of the Web 2.0, technically, people argue we are still in it on a more later period, but this is still debatable. The internet is changing (for worse) and people are desperate to coin new unnecessary webs, but no, we are still in 2.0. It's somehow still the same intelligent and popular ecosystem just directing towards AI generated content and brainrot.
